Generally, products which are labelled 'low' or 'zero' VOC are safer for
human and animal health in the home as well as the environment.
Green cleaning techniques and products avoid the use of chemically reactive and toxic products which contain various toxic chemicals, some of which emit volatile organic compounds causing respiratory, dermatological and other conditions.
Green cleaning refers to using cleaning methods and products with environmentally friendly ingredients designed to preserve human health and environmental quality.
And what are those toxic chemicals that pose potential everyday health risks?
Just to list a few most common compounds found in any of the cleaning products we use on a daily basis found in the most common window cleaners, multi purpose/bathroom/kitchen/stainless steel cleaners etc.
Come on give it a go, lift them off the shelves and check the backside of them for yourselves .
- Calcium hypochlorite
Marketed as chlorine powder or bleach powder. It strongly smells of chlorine, common uses include bathroom cleansers, household disinfectant sprays, algaecides, herbicides, and laundry detergents. Both hypochlorites are toxic by the oral and dermal routes. Direct contact with hypochlorite solutions, powder, or concentrated vapor causes severe chemical burns, leading to cell death and ulceration. Children are more vulnerable to toxicants affecting the skin. Hypochlorite powder, solutions, and vapor are irritating and corrosive to the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract. Exposure to gases released from hypochlorite may cause burning of the eyes, nose, and throat; cough as well as constriction and edema of the airway and lungs can occur.
Chlorine is a toxic gas that irritates the respiratory system. Coughing and vomiting may occur at 30 ppm and lung damage at 60 ppm. About 1000 ppm can be fatal after a few deep breaths of the gas. Breathing lower concentrations can aggravate the respiratory system, and exposure to the gas can irritate the eyes. The toxicity of chlorine comes from its oxidizing power. It is used in solvents for dry cleaning and metal degreasing, insecticides, household cleaning products, etc.
Ammonia, either directly or indirectly is used in many commercial cleaning products. Although in wide use, ammonia is both caustic and hazardous. Ammonia is a colourless gas with a characteristic pungent smell.
Household ammonia is a solution of NH3 in water (i.e., ammonium hydroxide) used as a general purpose cleaner for many surfaces. Because ammonia results in a relatively streak-free shine, one of its most common uses is to clean glass, porcelain and stainless steel. It is also frequently used for cleaning ovens and soaking items to loosen baked-on grime. Household ammonia ranges in concentration by weight from 5 to 10% ammonia.
These solutions are irritating to the eyes and mucous membranes (respiratory and digestive tracts), and to a lesser extent the skin. Caution should be used that the chemical is never mixed into any liquid containing bleach, as a poisonous gas may result.
- Carbon tetrachloride
Carbon tetrachloride serves as a source of chlorine. Carbon tetrachloride exposure has severe adverse health effects, such as causing fulminant hepatic necrosis. Carbon tetrachloride is also both ozone-depleting and a greenhouse gas. Like many other volatile substances, carbon tetrachloride is prone to misuse by inhalation, due to its possible depressant and/or dissociative effect upon the central nervous system. Use of carbon tetrachloride in this manner presents serious health risks, and may result in toxic effects described above.
